چکیده

IN THIS WORK, CARBON FIBRE REINFORCED POLYMER (CFRP) PLATES HAVE BEEN TESTED UNDER FREE IMPACT VIBRATION TESTS PRISTINE AND DAMAGED CONFIGURATIONS. EACH PLATE INVOLVED ONE CRACK OF SPECIFIC ORIENTATION (HORIZONTAL, VERTICAL, DIAGONAL). THE WERE SUSPENDED AS CANTILEVERS VIBRATED USING AN HAMMER. TWO ACCELEROMETERS MICROPHONE USED TO OBTAIN RESPONSE DATA SIGNALS FROM PLATES, FREQUENCY FUNCTION (FRF) WAS PLOTTED. CFRP ALSO SUBJECTED A TENSILE TEST SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (SEM), THEREBY ESTIMATING THEIR MECHANICAL PROPERTIES EVALUATING MICROSTRUCTURES. CURRENT TECHNIQUE FOCUSED ON DETECTED SIGNAL MORE THAN SENSOR ENSURE MEASUREMENT'S ACCURACY. COMPARISONS BETWEEN EXPERIMENTAL FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS (FEA) SIMULATION SHOWED THAT RESULTS AGREED. DAMAGE SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED COMPOSITES’ DYNAMICPROPERTIES. FRF MEASURES COMPOSITES LOWEST EIGENVALUES FOR EXCITED MODE SHAPES' RESONANT FREQUENCIES. 0/90 LAYUP LAMINATE COMPOSITE EXHIBITED GREATER FLUCTUATIONS FREQUENCIES ACROSS VARIOUS SHAPES DID QUASI-ISOTROPIC LAMINATES. REACHED 2.85% DIFFERENCE COMPARED COMPOSITES.

Numerical modelling of thermal decomposition processes and associated damage in carbon fibre composites

Thermo-chemical degradation of Carbon Fibre Composite materials (CFCs) under intensive heat fluxes has been modelled. The model couples together heat diffusion, polymer pyrolysis with associated gas production and convection through partially decomposed CFCs, and changes in transport properties of the material due to the damage. The model has been verified by laser ablation experiments with con...

‌Progressive Damage Analysis of Laminated Composites using Continuum Damage Mechanics

In this paper, progressive damage and global failure of composite laminates under quasi-static, monotonic loading are investigated using 3D continuum damage mechanics. For this purpose, a finite element program has been developed using an eight-node 2D layered element including layer-wise plate theory. Damage analysis of a single orthotropic layer under various uniform in-plane and transverse l...

NDT characterisation of carbon-fibre and glass-fibre composites using non-invasive imaging techniques

The prerequisite for more competent and cost effective transport has led to the evolution of innovative testing and evaluation procedures. Non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT & E) techniques for assessing the integrity of composite structures are essential to both reduce manufacturing costs and out of service time of transport means due to maintenance. Smart methods for assessing the in...

Image Characterization of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composites

A new methodology to detect fibres orientation in composite materials, using image processing tools is introduced. Several examples with manufacturing defects are studied using RIMAPS technique and the Variogram method. The characterization is made from digitized images of the samples. Combined use of RIMAPS and Variogram analyses identified the orientation of fibres and determined the values o...
